Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will help you. Psalm 37:5
Corey was driving around in his car, and playing his music, trying to clear his head. When he needed to think, he liked to hop in his car and drive. There were a lot of things going on, and he found himself being a little fearful about the future. Well, he found himself being a lot fearful about the future. His job situation wasn’t looking very strong. His company had been closing offices all over the country, and now he found out that the new site manager was actually brought in by headquarters to see if their office was effective enough in it’s operations to stay open, or if it should be closed. Corey had been there for ten years, and the thought of possibly having to look for a new job made him very nervous.
Then there was his son Kyle. His boy. His twenty-five year old son, who just didn’t get it. He still felt that he could live life his way, and by his rules, and that kind of thinking has done nothing but get him into trouble. He barely made it out of high school, and he didn’t have any type of post-secondary education. He didn’t feel that he needed it. As a result, he just jumped from one low paying job, to another.
To top it off, he had just made Corey a grandfather with a lady whose name he barely knew. Although Corey had tried, he still hadn’t been able to meet his grandchild, and he had little hope that he ever would. Corey had no idea how Kyle was going to provide for his child. He didn’t even make enough money for his own place. he stayed with his girlfriend, who, by the way, was not the mother of his child.
Then, there were his parents. They were getting older, and were now having health challenges. They were going to need care. He and his brother would not be able to care for them. They needed professional care, and that would cost money. A lot of money.
Corey sighed, as he pulled up to a stop light. A guy with a squeegee and a spray bottle came up to his car and started washing his windshield. Corey rolled down his window, and gave the guy a five dollar bill. The man smiled and thanked Corey.
He drove around for a little while longer. He was remembering something that Pastor Ross had talked about, just this past Sunday in church. He had talked about Psalm 37:5. “Commit your way to the Lord. Trust in him, and he will help you.” He had read that scripture before, but could never really grasp what it meant to commit your way to the Lord. The way Pastor Ross explained it was that it simply meant to trust in God, and live according to his will. You can understand God’s will by studying the Bible, and learning to apply it to your life, and by praying and asking for God’s direction when making decisions.
Corey was now starting to understand, that now was the time to stop being fearful about the future, and stressing over the things he was dealing with. It was time to really start to seek God’s direction and guidance. He shook his head, and gave himself an “I could’ve had a V8,” smack in the forehead. Sometimes, the most obvious thing, is the last thing that you think to do. Go figure.
Heavenly Father. We just want to take the time and ask for your direction and guidance for every situation in our lives. Help us to have the faith and courage to follow your direction. Amen.
