As Randy walked down the steps out of the church after service, he instinctively looked back for her, even though he knew she wouldn’t be there. He was heartbroken, even though he would never admit it to anyone. Hanging his head, he walked to the car behind his parents and older brother, June, short for Junior. June had no sympathy for him at all. “Lil bro, she hasn’t been kidnapped by aliens. Her family just moved, that’s all. Besides, there’s plenty of fish in the ocean.”
Randy’s girlfriend, Samantha, or Sammie, as everyone called her, the love of his life, had moved away. Her dad got a new job, and now they moved a thousand miles away. She would wait for him by the door at church every Sunday, and he would either go eat with her family, or she would come eat with his. They liked to go on long walks together. She would even come to his football games, even though she went to a different school. Now she had moved away.
Last week, the night before her family moved, Randy and Sammie just sat on the front steps at her house. She laid her head on Randy’s shoulder and weeped. Randy had felt like crying too, but he didn’t. What was the scripture Rev. Monroe had given him? Rev. Monroe was their youth pastor. He always seemed to have the right words to say, whatever the situation was.
It was Psalm 30:5. “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” Randy didn’t know about any joy coming in the morning, or coming ever again, but Rev. Monroe had explained to him that when we trust in God our suffering is only temporary. We may be going through it right now, but God will see us through all of it.
Randy’s dad was taking them out to eat, to try and cheer Randy up a little. As he sat in the back seat of the car, Randy bowed his head. “Well Lord. I am just going to trust in you to get me through this, and also to get Sammie through it too, because I know she was sad about leaving.” He felt a little better. He knew he had a long way to go, but he knew God would bring him through it.
Thought: This may seem to be sort of a light-hearted situation about heartbreak and loss, but the point is that God will bring us through any loss, or any heartbreak we may face, as long as we put our trust in him.
